How trailing stop orders follow the price and when they let you down
A trailing stop moves with the market in your favour and triggers when the price reverses by a set distance. Learn how trailing stops work on Binance, OKX, Bybit and Bitget and their limitations.

A fixed stop order stays where you put it. A trailing stop, by contrast, moves. As the price moves in your favour, the trigger level follows it at a distance you choose, either a percentage or a price amount. When the price reverses by that distance from its best level, the order triggers. The idea is attractive: you let a winning position run while locking in part of the gain if the trend turns. Binance, OKX, Bybit and Bitget all offer trailing orders in some form, though names, settings and availability differ by product. This guide explains the mechanics, the choices you have to make when setting one and the situations where a trailing stop behaves differently from what people expect.
The callback distance is the key setting
The most important decision is how far the price may retrace before the order triggers. Some platforms call this the callback rate or trailing distance. Set it too tight and ordinary price noise will trigger the order early, closing a position that might have continued in your favour. Set it too wide and you give back much of the gain before the order acts. A useful starting point is to look at how much the asset typically moves within the time frame you care about, and choose a distance comfortably beyond that normal fluctuation.
Activation price and what happens on trigger
Many trailing orders let you set an activation price, meaning the trailing only begins once the market reaches that level. Without one, trailing starts immediately from the current price. When the trailing stop triggers, it usually sends a market order, which means the fill may be some distance from the trigger in a fast or thin market. Check in each exchange's help centre how its trailing orders execute, and whether they follow the last traded price or another reference price on derivatives.
Where trailing stops disappoint
Trailing stops work best in markets that trend smoothly. In choppy, sideways conditions they can trigger repeatedly on small reversals, generating fees and leaving you out of the market just before it resumes. Sudden gaps, such as during major news, can cause a fill far worse than the trigger. And because the order is conditional, it does nothing until triggered, so it is not a substitute for sensible position sizing. Treat it as one tool among several, not a guarantee of protected profits.
Testing and reviewing your settings
Before relying on trailing stops for meaningful positions, test them with small amounts and observe how they behave. Note the callback distance, activation price, trigger time and fill price for each. Compare outcomes with what a fixed stop at a similar distance would have done. Review open conditional orders weekly and cancel any that no longer fit your plan. Over time, your notes will show which distances suit the assets and time frames you trade.

Scenario checkpoint
- Choose a callback distance wider than the asset's normal price noise for your intended time frame.
- Decide whether the trailing should start immediately or only after an activation price is reached.
- Check in the exchange help centre whether a triggered trailing stop sends a market order and which price it follows.
- Test trailing stops with small positions and record trigger and fill prices before relying on them.
