Spread and slippage: the hidden costs between the price you see and the price you get
Trading fees are printed on a schedule, so they get most of the attention. Two other costs are invisible on that schedule: the spread, which is the gap between the best buy and sell prices, and slippage, which is the difference between the price you expected and the average price you actually received. On thin markets these can exceed the fee by a wide margin. This guide explains both in plain language, shows how to read the order book on Binance, OKX, Bybit or Bitget and gives simple habits to reduce the hidden cost of each trade.
What the spread tells you
Every market has a best price at which someone will buy and a best price at which someone will sell. The gap between them is the spread. If you buy at market and sell soon after at market, you cross that gap twice, which is a real cost even when the fee is small. Wide spreads usually signal low liquidity or unsettled conditions, and they tend to widen when markets move sharply.
What slippage is
Slippage appears when your order is larger than what is available at the best price. The order consumes one level after another and your average price ends up worse than the one displayed at the start. It grows with order size and shrinks on deep books. The order book view shows how much volume sits at each price level, so you can estimate the effect before you click.
Habits that reduce the cost
Prefer limit orders when you are not in a hurry, since you control the price. Split large orders into smaller ones and check the book between them. Avoid market orders during sudden news-driven moves when the book is thin. Compare convert quotes with the order book, because a convenient screen may build a spread into its price. Fees for each product are explained on the official fee pages.
Measure your own costs
After a few trades, compare the price you expected with the average fill price in your order history. Record the difference with the date and the pair. Over time the notes show which pairs are expensive for you and which habits cost you most. This personal measurement is more useful than any general claim about which platform is cheaper.
